POST-BARIATRIC SURGERY (SURGERY AFTER MASSIVE WEIGHT LOSS) IN WESTCHESTER COUNTY, NEW YORK

As massive weight loss surgery increases in popularity in the New York region so have the number of patients seeking plastic surgery after massive losses in weight. Patients who have lost massive amounts of weight often require a series of operations to deal with their excess skin and fat in various anatomic areas. Whether it is from dieting or bariatric surgery, excess skin after massive weight loss is problematic for many reasons. The excess skin is easily irritated and difficult to hide in clothing. For many patients, the hope of being able to finally fit into normal clothing is on hold until the hanging skin and fat has been removed. Increasingly, post-bariatric weight loss patients are turning to body contouring surgery to help reshape and recontour their skin envelope.

During your consultation, Dr. Greenwald will carefully examine you. He will take a detailed history from you. For best results from body contouring surgery, your weight should be relatively stable for at least three months. During your consultation, you will point out the areas of your body that concern you most. If there is more than one area of concern, Dr. Greenwald will have you prioritize the areas. Once Dr. Greenwald is aware of which areas bother you the most and the least, a surgical plan will be formulated. Dr. Greenwald understands that a comprehensive, staged approach must be taken to post-bariatric weight loss surgery patients. If tissue is removed from only certain areas of the body, it will result in an asymmetric correction of the body (ie removing hanging tissue form the abdomen and not addressing redundant skin of the buttocks). Often this plan consists of more than one surgery. Often some combination of a lower body lift, thigh lift, brachioplasty and breast surgery are required to recontour the body of a massive weight loss patients. Information on these procedures can be found elsewhere on this website.

Dr. Greenwald understands the decision to undergo body contouring after massive weight loss is an important one. Although the majority of patients experience no major complications, Dr. Greenwald will discuss potential risks and complications of body contouring surgery the time of your consultation. Prior to undergoing body contouring after massive weight loss surgery with Dr. Greenwald, it is important for you to fully understand the risks and potential complications associated with your procedure. All massive weight loss patients will be asked to see their primary medical doctor prior to their surgery to be cleared for anesthesia. In addition, patients will be asked to see their cardiologist prior to their surgery if Dr. Greenwald or their primary medical doctor feels it is indicated. Large body contouring procedures are typically performed in the hospital. Dr. Greenwald maintains operating privileges at several local hospitals including White Plains Hospital (White Plains, New York), Northern Westchester Hospital (Mount Kisco, NY) and Putnam Hospital Center (Carmel, NY).
